I am glad to see Deströyer 666 pulling out of the hole they fell into with the awful Wildfire in 2016. The Call of the Wild EP showed they were improving, and now we have their 6th full-length showing a band that seems to be getting back to what they are supposed to be good at. The first thing I noticed here was that the riffs are back, and these songs sound a lot more like proper Deströyer 666 songs, though they are still working a more melodic sound than in the old days. The only major drawback is that the vocals are still KK using his more melodic, Thrash-styled voice rather than the deathly blackened rasp we would all prefer. That said, this avoids the sing-song, wussy clean style of Wildfire, and nowhere does this sound like HammerFall or some shit like that. The production could use a bit more edge and heaviness, but it's a definite step up from the last few outings. This is nowhere near another Unchain the Wolves, but at least this band sounds pissed off again. |
