Pale Spektre's debut mixes fast, chaotic, savage black metal with some doomy elements that completely change the landscape to crushing atmospheric passages that will give you the chills and make you keep looking over your shoulder. One of the most remarkable things is the vocal style, a cavernous, shouted hybrid of rasps and screeches that adds a whole new layer of insanity and hellish darkness to the songs – I often found myself almost hypnotized. Some of the slow and doomy passages have a bit of that '70s occult heavy rock and a hint of early Sabbath going for them. They're few and far between and pretty much over before you know it, quickly changing shape into more chaotic hellish speedfests. That makes for some rollercoaster-ish songs that take you in all kinds of directions. Bereft of Xerotic Layers goes by quickly, even though while listening to it, it feels like you're stuck in hell eternal. A strong debut that will be hard to top. |
