Debut for this band from Birmingham, and while I have seen it listed as "post" Black Metal, aside from some more melodic impulses I don't hear anything to really substantiate that. There are some moodier passages, and a use of some mournful clean vocals, but overall this is ambitious Black Metal with a lot of variety in the riffing, from the expected tremolo attack to chunkier, almost Doom Metal passages. There is a bit of a Cascadian sound at work here, along with expansive songwriting that recalls bands like Nightbringer, but mostly I find the melodic ideas here are just good, and demand proper attention. A lot of time these kinds of long compositions lose the thread and become tedious, but I don't find that happening here, and I am always interested in what these songs will do next. A very strong debut recording. |
