Doomsday Script is the third album from another of Cedrick Forsberg's multitude of bands, Runelord. Last time out, I compared their chunky, crunchy power metal to bands like Brainstorm and Running Wild, but on Doomsday Script Forsberg and singer Georgy Peichev are channeling Cryonic Temple. Whether it is mid-paced, punchy anthems like "Armed for Danger" or speedy, double-kick numbers like "Doomsday Script," the combo of Peichev's Glen Metal-like delivery and Forsberg's guitar work had me fondly recalling Blood, Guts, and Glory and In Thy Power. That's not to say Runelord sound exactly like Cryonic Temple, as they are a rougher and far less catchy version of that band, and Peichev's singing is a little suspect this time around. Whether it is reaching for a note and missing ("Golden Chamber") or drifting flat ("Corrupt Midgard"), we don't seem to be getting his "A" game on Doomsday Script, at least not all the time. I can't remember much of the album once it is over, but I don't actively dislike it while on, so in that sense, Runelord haven't regressed since 2018's A Message From the Past, but they haven't gotten noticeably better, either. More standard crunchy power metal aimed mainly at the power metal fanatics out there who just can't get enough. |
