This is a band that aims for the sound of some '90s black metal bands like Dimmu Borgir, Emperor and other keyboard-heavyish bands, and at that they succeed in that these are the bands that came to mind when I first listened to it, along with a tiny hint of early Cradle of Filth for good measure. This is fast and heavy with a pretty clean and polished sound albeit with a slight raw edge. The keyboards sometimes sound a little off, taking too much attention from the other instruments and, even though the songs aren't bad, I find that a more subtle use more often than not ends up sounding better. Mind you, their influences also had a tendency to go over the top with keyboards, so it's not exactly surprising. This is well done and worth checking out if you can't get enough of that sound, but the album brings nothing new to the table. |
