Mexico's Phantom spent 2022 cranking out several demos, culminating with Hellspeed Death in late December. They play speedy thrash, with the emphasis on speed, and don't worry as much about how tight the performances are. Being a demo, Hellspeed Death has a basic sound; the drums are thin and the vocals are muddy, but the guitars cut through with a good, sharp bite. Most of the songs, which are appearing here for the second or even third time on a Phantom demo, are standard punky thrash and you can hear influences like early Voïvod, Wargasm and especially Slayer circa Haunting the Chapel, most notably on the vocal lines for "Phantom." This is a demo, so you have to make allowances for some of the sound and playing and, once you do, you'll find there's potential hidden in all the raucousness. I'm not saying Phantom is going to be the next big thing, but with tighter playing and a better recording job, these guys could melt a few faces. |
