Imperial Dawn is the third album from Sweden's Rexoria, a band that plays slick, polished power metal that reaches across genres to embrace some of the elements of electronic dance in a way groups like Battle Beast and Follow the Cypher have (but not as egregiously as Beast in Black). Songs like "The New Revelation" and "Set Me on Fire" have insanely catchy choruses and keys that would fit in at a dance club with no problem, but Rexoria's music is firmly rooted to heavy metal by the drums, guitars and bass, none of which allow any of the gloss to overshadow them. I love when they put the pedal to the metal, like on "Rage for Madness," but the overall songwriting is pretty consistent throughout Imperial Dawn and it is an enjoyable power metal album, even if it doesn't do much fans haven't heard before. The energy and hooks more than make up for a lack of originality. |
