Odinfist play fun, DIY-style old school heavy metal that's not without its charms, but also its rough edges. I enjoy this more than the rating may hint at. Their influences are clearly noticeable, probably the most prominent one being Iron Maiden, with a dash of Judas Priest. It's rather unpolished, and I usually don't have a problem with that, but there are more than a few passages on the album that call for a "oooook... let's retake this one from the top." There's nothing horrible here, mind you. It's quite energetic and a lot of this stuff is kind of catchy. As can be expected from the genre, it's all been done before, but Odinfist do have the right attitude and delivery, which I find helps look over the more cringe-worthy moments. Closer "Masquerade" ends the album on a sour note. I've listened to the album several times and it never misses, this one just doesn't live up to the rest of the album. It definitely has that "it's over" sound, but not in a good way. The album would have been better off without it. With all that said, there's some cool stuff here, so Odinfist is definitely a band to keep an eye on if you can't get enough traditional heavy metal. |
