This one was a bit of a surprise. Children of the Reptile have been around since the late 2000s, but I'd never heard them (and of them) before this. These guys are all over the place, mixing '70s heavy rock and heavy metal, '80s heavy metal and even going '80s thrash on us every now and then. This makes for a varied, yet coherent album with a lot to discover with every listen. I especially like the guitar work, lots of winks to the past without sounding stale in the slightest. Overall the album is quite catchy, with lots of speed but also quite a few quieter passages that pop up almost unexpectedly, all without breaking the flow of the album. If you like '70s and '80s heavy metal and early thrash but don't want a band just ripping off the past greats, there's a lot of enjoyment to be found on Heavy Is the Head. |
