Always interesting when issues with a release end up being addressed in the next. I covered Infernal Tyrant’s debut a while back and rather liked its sharp, technical approach, but felt it suffered from poor vocals and samey songwriting. Well, here we are with a new EP that introduces Billy Lynn as their new vocalist, whose gruff, muscular delivery adds a good amount of bite and impact to the songs while Mike’s raspy delivery only appears as backing vocals for opener "Project Chaos," which I think suits them much better. The songwriting has also improved from last time, containing more variety in tempo and composition to further support Mike’s sharp, sometimes neoclassical guitar work, as on the excellent ending section of "Path of Peace." However, Billy also employs clean vocals in spots, and while some echo is used to help cover some of his weaknesses, he has a shaky, nasally delivery that sounds at odds with the chugging aggression, and I think that a more confident and gritty approach would fit better. Still, this short release is proof that the project is moving in the right direction, and I’m definitely interested to see what they do from here. |
