Second album from this Canadian band, and it's a monster. With a 68-minute running time and only 6 tracks, you know you have some epics on here. Three songs are over 12 minutes, and the closer "Turambar (Master of Doom/By Doom Mastered)" is a massive 18 minutes. So if you are in a mood for epic, then this is the fucking definition. This broadly reminds me of bands like Wotan, Doomsword, Mael Mordha, or Battleroar in their early days. Massive songs with some massive riffs, a lot of it almost purely instrumental, with a lot of long, wordless passages. Singer Kevin Loghnane has a tough midrange voice that is not really that distinctive, but it works for the material at hand. The songwriting here is big, chaotic, and could probably stand to be tightened up a good bit. Then again, the very excessive nature of the album is part of the charm: everything is so big and so long and so overstated, and that's part of what makes it cool. If you trimmed this down, it would not be as interesting. |
