I missed this when it came out a few years back, and I am sorry I did. Chevalier are a Finnish band who play a fast, primitive style of classic metal, similar to other messy bands like Brocas Helm, Sortilege, Lords of the Crimson Alliance, or even Manilla Road on their early releases. The production is intentionally raw and overdriven, making it sound vintage as well as adding an underground charm to the proceedings. The lack of recording polish means the songs have to live or die by riffs and attitude, and Chevalier have plenty of those. Vocalist Emma Gronqvist sails on pure charisma and power—she certainly isn't technical or anything like that, she just goes for it. The whole band is pretty much like that, and all of this sounds like bottled lightning ripped out in one balls-out take. Underground gold. |
