Impending Triumph is a band formed in July 2020 and the name along with the cover art on their self-titled EP scream Manowar. Speaking of screaming, at the beginning of "Armies of the Conqueror" the singer lets one loose that while neither as long nor as keening as the one at the beginning of "Blood of My Enemies," still reminded me of Eric Adams, further cementing the comparison. Impending Triumph lists a number of other influences in their biography on the Jawbreaker Records website (they don't seem to have an entry at Metal Archives as of this writing), but the one that jumps to my mind isn't listed and that's Grand Magus. The entire EP has the same pounding rhythms and epic atmosphere with the vocals and even lead work often a little further back in the mix compared with the directness of Manowar, making it feel like the events described in the lyrics are shrouded in mist. All the songs are powerful headbangers but lack the kind of hooks, especially on the choruses, that this band is aspiring to. Hopefully, they will dial that in for their debut album which they are currently working on. Despite being a bit on the generic side, Impending Triumph is a promising first salvo from this new band and one that fans of epic heavy metal should be adding to their watch lists. |
