I enjoyed the debut album from France's Animalize, Meat We're Made Of, which was released in 2022 and, thanks to Dying Victims Productions, now we can all get a taste of their 2020 EP, Tapes from the Crypt, which was originally released independently by the band. It is cut from the same cloth as Meat We're Made Of, that being speedy, '80s-style heavy metal with an authentic sound and tongue-in-cheek lyrics. There is clearly a love of horror in whoever in the band writes the lyrics and calling a song about werewolves (or some other cursed nocturnal denizen) "Meatnight Race" is pretty amusing. Not that the song, or any of the others, are jokes, Animalize just doesn't seem to take themselves overly serious which is refreshing and allows an infectious energy to come through in the performances. The rest of the EP is just as good, with some nice lead work and catchy choruses even on the French-sung tracks, and that's coming from someone that doesn't speak French. Obviously if you enjoyed the album, you're going to enjoy Tapes from the Crypt, but if you haven't had the chance and '80s speed metal from bands like Savage Grace and Nasty Savage with a dash of Dokken, Mötley Crüe and WASP before they drifted into glam/hair territory sounds appealing, this one should be up your alley.
