A name like Frenzy had me thinking of a thrash band, but this Spanish band plays melodic traditional metal with a hard-rocking streak that takes me back to the mid-80s. Of Hoods and Masks is their second album and it is a solid effort full of straightforward riffs, catchy choruses and an accessible sensibility that stays true to the band's metal roots most of the time. Tracks like "The Doomsday" are metallic gold, punchy and upbeat, while "Where Is the Joke?," despite the coarse language it contains, has a great hook to the chorus. The rest of the album follows these templates closely and it is a great album to put on and just rock out to. At just a hair over 35 minutes, the perfect length for this kind of record, it never wears out its welcome. Of Hoods and Masks should be right up the alley of anyone that digs old Krokus, Armored Saint, Malice, etc. |
