Fifth album for this German band that makes no bones about going for an early '80s thrash/first wave of black metal sound. As on their previous album I reviewed, 2021's Infernal Power, Lucifuge play it fast and mean on Monoliths of Wrath, but have gotten even tighter with their riffs while losing none of their wicked bite. Venom is still the main reference point, owing to the harsh vocals that ooze a sneering evil, but you can pick out riffing that is more in line with Kill 'Em All Metallica (the opening of"Visions of Death") and Show No Mercy Slayer (the speed in the mid-section of "Dissolving Into God"). There are no standout tracks, just 37 minutes of killer thrash that never once gets boring mainly because you have no chance to catch your breath until the record ends. Get the fire department's number programmed into your phone because you will be burning up the fret board on your air guitar. |
