When I listen to an album like Century's The Conquest of Time, I'm transported back to 1984 and the days of buying albums based on band names and album covers, bringing them home, unwrapping them and plopping down the needle in anticipation of the metal goodness about to wash over me. The only thing missing is the hiss and crackle of an actual turntable, since I'm exclusively digital these days. The music on The Conquest of Time is authentically '80s, mostly like the stuff coming from Europe and the NWOBHM. It's fast, raucous, and simple with plenty of echo on the vocals and a production that does a nice job of capturing that analog feel of days long gone. Century have an epic streak running through their trad metal songwriting (and thankfully little if any of the hard rock that often pervaded NWOBHM releases). "Black Revenant" has an ancient and eldritch feel to it, while on "Servants of the Iron Mask" you can hear the Manilla Road influence in the way the song is put together and played. Is there anything here you haven't heard before? No, but it was obviously written to reverently honor the olden days of metal, and Century nailed it. If bands like Brainfever, Blitzkrieg, Tokyo Blade, et al. get you warming up the air Flying V, do not miss The Conquest of Time. |
