Follow the Cold Path is the debut for this one-man atmospheric black metal band from Brazil. Clearly influenced by Summoning a whole lot, Autrest main man Matheus Vidor has crafted a very melodic album with keys and guitars working in tandem to create the impressions of vast spaces, both cold and dark, yet with a haunting beauty. The vocals are waaay back in the mix, so even if they are decipherable, you can't hear what Vidor is saying. The main flaw with Follow the Cold Path is one that plagues many bands trying to ply these waters; everything sounds good but there isn't much that sticks around after the album is over, rendering it more suitable as background music. It isn't bad but it's not much different from many of the other releases in this style, so if atmospheric black metal is your thing, you'll like it well enough, but it probably won't replace any of your favorites. |
