On Topheth, Novae Militiae bank more on atmosphere than on speed, though you'll still find a healthy dose of speedy black metal. This time, however, the dark and demonic atmosphere flows even into the faster passages, which also bear vocals often more akin to incantations than just screeches, delivered more slowly than the music and making the two sound out of sync, but in a good way. The whole album and heavy and dark and comes off as downright crushing thanks to the atmosphere that's simply nightmarish and out of this world. Musically I like this as much as Gash'khalah, but the overall feeling of Topheth is so much darker and demonic and it's so much of a "pin you to your seat" album that I found it a more enjoyable. |
