I am always glad to hear Tech Death that remembers the Death part and doesn't get caught up in prog-jazz masturbation, so I was glad to discover Orpahlis. This is not a new band, and As the Ashes Settle is their fourth album in a career that goes back to 2010. As far as Tech bands go, this is not that extreme, with a lot of tight arrangements and some very precise playing, but arrangements that are not too out there, and mostly stay lean and mean, with a lot of distinct parts and time shifts, but not losing the thread of what they are trying to do. This is very busy, and about halfway through it starts to wear on me a bit, as it is kind of exhausting keeping up with it all. Fans of bands like Immolation or Sulphur Aeon will find a lot to like here. |
