The first album from Sweden's Mezzrow, 1990's Then Came the Killing, arrived as the scene was about to undergo big changes and they were apparently unable to find enough of an audience to go on and hung up their instruments in 1993. Reuniting in 2005, it has taken another 18 years, but now we have their second album, Summon Thy Demons. It should be a small leap from looking at their current logo to assuming Mezzrow plays '80s-style thrash metal on this new effort. Barking vocals, crisp riffs, and plenty of pinches and squeals hearken back to big names of thrash metal, with Testament and Slayer the most obvious influences. The songwriting is solid, and the band puts a lot of fire into their performances, but there isn't anything here that hasn't been done before. I'm not saying it won't kick your ass, because it will, but you might not remember much after it is over other than the ass kicking. |
