This is technically a live album, but only in the sense of "recorded live in the studio with no audience" which I feel like really is not the proper use of the term. Countless Skies are from the very clean, proggy end of the melodeath pool, to where the harsh vocals are almost an afterthought. The playing is sharp and clean, the recording is similarly glossy with that prog sheen, and the clean singing is really quite good. There is a lot I like here, but I do feel like the compositions are unfocused, so even if all the disparate parts are solid, they don't always seem to mesh with each other. If you like stuff like modern Amorphis or the later Dark Tranquility albums, then this might be up your alley. |
