Sporting an oddly bleak album title juxtaposed with a hilarious album cover comes Firmament, a German act that works in a vein of NWOBHM that's just as much about Maiden and Angel Witch as it is Thin Lizzy and Scorpions. This has all the rocking energy, blazing riffs, and twin harmonies you would expect from that description, but it all comes with a surprisingly melancholic undercurrent to a lot of the melodic work and especially the vocals, which goes a long way to making the band stand out in a sea of competitors. There are some killer tracks on here like "Dreams of Misery" and "Hide & Seek," but there are no real dead spots on the album, making it a fairly addictive little debut that you'll wind up spinning several times over. A strong start. |
