This is a long-running band who have switched up their style more than once in their almost 20-year history. From straight Black Metal, to a period of post/doom/gaze, and back to the almost melancholic Black Metal vibe on their seventh album, Fires in the Fall. With the melodic approach and the epic songwriting, there is more than a bit of bands like Drudkh and even a touch of Wolves in the Throne Room to this sound, but I don't find it solidly imitative of any one band. The riffs are densely melodic and inventive, always spinning off little twists and turns that keep things interesting. The production is solid, with a hard-edged guitar sound and a lot of depth. I like the arcane, heathen atmosphere of this, and I like the constantly evolving melodic lines. The vocals are a bit flat, but they don't detract. For fans of intensely melodic and atmospheric Black Metal. |
