If you're going to name your project after one of the most ridiculous and iconic monsters in Dungeons and Dragons, you'd better make some badass music, and that's exactly what Owlbear do with their (as of writing) upcoming debut, Chaos to the Realm. Headed by Adamantis alumni Jeff Taft on guitars while also sporting Leona Hayward of Project: Roenwolfe and Skelator on bass along with Klaymore's Katy Scary on vocals, this band is all about speedy, good old-fashioned U.S. metal with screaming solos, blazing riffs, and high-pitched vocals, all delivered with relentless energy and enthusiasm while relying on no gimmicks outside of kicking ass. I'll say that I prefer the later half of the album, with tunes like the epic "Iuz the Old," the careening title track, and the excellent "Voyage of the Wraiths" showing what these seasoned pros can do at full power, but the entire album is a blast from beginning to end that'll remind you of your most badass moments playing D&D as you flail your head. Recommended. |
