Hour of 13—and a horde of other bands—main man Chad Davis has yet another project to add to his ever-growing resume, Old Ghoul. This is Davis' outlet for crusty, cobwebby doom, festering with crushing, down-tuned riffs, thick layers of hazy reverb, and nonconformist vocals. With only three tracks on their self-titled debut EP, it's a bit of a challenge to get a handle on Old Ghoul's sound. The songwriting isn't overly varied and it's not a million miles away from some of the stoner music out there, however the low, rolling riffery, especially on "The End of It All," is Sabbathian to the bone. After I factor in the vocals, which come from the same moldering crypt that produced singers like Tim Baker and Eric Wagner, I'm hopeful we're going to be getting a leaden slab of pure doom metal when Davis puts a full-length together. Old Ghoul might not be doing anything truly surprising yet, but they are creepy and twisted enough to have piqued my interest for what comes next. |
