This is more "modern metal" than I usually go for, but there seemed to be something here from sampling a couple of songs. It's definitely more modern heavy metal than it is old school, but Rockin' Engine aren't shy about their early influences, and it doesn't take much effort to extract some of the more commercial and catchy heavy metal of the '80s influences that can be found in their songs. This is quite accessible stuff, very melodic and with sometimes entertaining lyrics (the Three Little Pigs, really? Now I've heard everything!) There are some hard rock influences as well here, on top of the aforementioned '80s and the '90s/early 2000s commercial stuff that most people reading this probably dreaded as much as I did. But Rockin' Engine make this tolerable and it mostly works—no mean feat. I can't say this is something I'll ever go back to, but if the band were to play in the vicinity, I'd probably check them out just for kicks as this EP definitely has its moments. |
