Greece has certainly taken a prominent role in the epic/traditional heavy metal resurgence, and Darklon is another entry into an already impressive roll call of young bands like Triumpher, Achelous, and Wrathblade. On their second album, The Redeemer, Darklon put the riff front and center and there are some top-notch examples throughout. The lead work is perhaps not inventive but, wow, it is energetic, and on tracks like "Iron Glory," it is easy to get swept up in the swirl of it all. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals, which are a gravelly shout that to my ears would fit better in a thrash setting, but they are by no means bad. They just don't mesh quite the way I like in my epic/trad metal. The songwriting is quite good with a number of hooks, especially the rapid-fire chorus on "The Bloodstone," which nicely complements the more mid-tempo, marching tempo of the rest of the song. Nice effort from Darklon and, for anyone into the epic/traditional revival and classic acts like Omen and Armored Saint, one to dig into. |
