Review

I had never heard of this Brazilian band before their fifth album, The Dragonheart's Tale, showed up in my review queue. Going by the name alone, you might think fantasy power metal along the lines of Rhapsody or Ancient Bards, but the cover art reveals what the album contains, that being pirate/high-seas power metal. These guys follow a well-known blueprint for crunchy, melodic songs that do not deviate much from the expected. That isn't bad when the songs are superb, but The Dragonheart's Tale has more middling songwriting with nothing in the way of choruses, vocal lines, solos, etc. that are all that catchy. "Westgate Battlefield" is a typical speedy, crunchy track and Dragonheart employ both male and female clean singing but also a gruff shout that when combined with some of the catchier choruses, such as "The Devil by My Side" and "Barbarian Armada" remind me of Lordi. The end with a spot-on Edguy homage, including the warbling, Tobias Sammett vibrato, on the ballad "Early Days." I can't say The Dragonheart's Tale is a bad album, but with bland writing, cliché lyrical themes, and an overall lack of anything truly exciting, it is simply another pedestrian power metal album in a vast sea of them. You might enjoy it while it is on but is nothing you truly need.
