Meurtrières is a relatively new band from France that formed in 2018 and is now releasing their debut album, Ronde de nuit, via Gates of Hell Records. They play a nice, classic style of heavy metal that focuses on the guitars a lot, which I like. There are loads of pugnacious riffs, some Judas Priest-like harmonies, and plenty of tasty lead work for the guitar aficionado in all of us. "Chevaleresses de chaos" stands out to my ears but honestly, there isn't a bad song on Ronde de nuit, which is why it pains me to say the vocals are not on the same level. The singer, who is listed only as Fiona, has a clear, strong voice, but it is charmless and she often struggles to stay in tune, most notably on the bridge in "Ronde de nuit" and for much of "Alma Mater." Other times she's on the right note but her voice has little depth or character. I don't feel this is a fatal flaw, but it needs to be addressed on future releases. Meurtrières is nevertheless a promising band, especially if you're following the trend of traditional heavy metal bands fronted by female singers like Shadowland and Tower, but they aren't quite there yet.
