My Funeral are a 4-piece death/thrash hybrid act that's been strumming along since 2005, complete with three prior full-lengths and the expected assortment of demos, EPs, and singles in that time. Their latest, Funeral Manifesto, is the first proper full-length they've had in 8 years, likely due to lineup changes with the addition of drummer Tomi Louhesto and guitarist Carlos Correa, and the best way to describe it is something between the ferocity of old Slayer and the crushing groove of Entombed. Hell, singer Ilkka Sepponen sounds so much like LG Petrov you'd think they just brought him back from the grave and gave him a stage name so no one would protest (rest well, Petrov), and his killer performance goes a long way in making this a highly enjoyable release. Musically, it's about as tight and ferocious as you'd expect from a band that's been around for nearly two decades, with plenty of vicious blasts of good ol' fashioned death/thrash to give your neck a severe workout, such as the flailing "Suicidal Thrash," the Morning Star-esque "Darkness Walks Besides Me," and the skull flattening "When Darkness Eats." The album is brought down a bit by the closer "The Uprise," which inexplicably sounds like some shit from later Machine Head and is severely out of place here, but this is a strong workout from seasoned hands overall, and definitely worth looking into.
