I quite enjoyed the debut from Los Densos, so I was pretty happy to get a copy of their sophomore effort from the band themselves. I was hoping they'd build on the energetic, stoner-tinged traditional metal sound found on Habitantes de la obscuridad, and the kind of have, but not really in the direction I was hoping. This album is definitely heavier and more modern sounding than before, with some tunes sounding a bit like Monster Magnet if they had more of a southern groove to the guitar work. The cost is that the songs themselves are less vibrant and fun, with less identity and snap to them than before. The bass gets some cool grooving licks in the spotlight, and the guitar work is still pretty good, especially the leads, but it's also more rhythmic and less vibrant, which also makes the album less engaging. I dunno, maybe the band thought they needed to update their sound to attract more of an audience, as this is almost an entirely different sound that rejects the Golden Age sheen of their debut, but then maybe it's what the band was aiming for since it doubles down on the stoner elements in its place. Regardless, this might bring in some new fans for them, but it also likely won't appeal much to anyone who wanted more of the debut, which sadly includes me. |
