Forty-five years after their self-titled demo, NWOBHM legends Girlschool have released their thirteenth album of original material, WTFortyfive?. This band has always been about straight ahead, chugging riffs and hook-laden choruses and the passing of time has done little to dull their songwriting skills. For any fan of hard rocking heavy metal, singing along with nearly the entire album is only going to take a couple of listens because the choruses are that infectious. Whether Girlschool lean in the direction of hard rock, sounding like a killer cross between Joan Jett and early Def Leppard, or tap into their heavier side, like when they "merged" with Motörhead as Head Girl, my feet were tapping. My favorites on WTFortyfive? are the menacing "Cold, Dark Heart," the classic NWOBHM sounding "Invisible Killer," and the poppy but oh so singable "It's a Mess," but there are no bad songs here, just a band not afraid to embrace their roots without sounding like they are simply rehashing the past. Well, they do cover Motörhead's "Born to Raise Hell" (with help from Biff Byford, Phil Campbell, and Duff McKagen for good measure), but they do a great job and their history with Lemmy and crew make this a no-brainer. This one should sound great if classic '80s releases like Saxon's Crusader, Krokus' Headhunter, Warlock's Triumph and Agony, etc. are still in your regular rotation.
