Another thrash band that came about a little too late in the '80s, Fallen Angel released the Hang-Over demo in 1989 and their only album, Faith Fails, in 1992. This reissue of the album includes the demo as bonus tracks, for just over 66 minutes of thrash goodness. This is an interesting album in that it's all over the place in terms of influences, from Bay Area to more aggressive German thrash to more technical thrash as well as hints of crossover for seasoning. The vocals throughout are clean and aggressive with a hint of early Metallica Hetfield and another thrash singer I can't just put my finger on no matter how much I've tried during several listens. Oh well. There's lots of melody and the occasional acoustic passage, though overall this is rather fast paced. It comes off a bit long for a thrash album (the original is just under 49 minutes; the bonus tracks bring it over 66), but it's not boring due to the various influences. You can't miss the switch to the demo tracks tackled at the end as things get much more lo-fi and raw and the music is even heavier than on the album, and the singing is not as good as it is on the album tracks, but it's interesting to hear how the singer perfected his technique in just a couple of years. Too bad the band fell victim to the death metal and grunge waves. |
