Funeral Doom is hard to get right. It looks easy, since it's just Doom played slow, right? Except it's not, it has a completely different sound and set of values for what it does and how it does it, so too often bands just grind away without getting what makes Funeral Doom great. I am glad to say that this Spanish band, who's name means "Ornaments of Fear," seem to have a really good grasp on how to do what they do. This is a one-man act that has put out four albums in the last four years, and this latest album is a fine slice of atmospheric Doom music. Very much focused on mood and feel, this does not skimp on heaviness, and weaves in a lot of really affecting, involving melodies. Here is a full understanding that this kind of music has to use chord and song structures that build tension and suspend meaning until the payoff comes, and when it does, it has to crush. Does this go on longer than it probably needs to? Sure, but that kind of excess is just part of the package. If you like stuff like Ahab or Catacombs, then this is something you should check out. |
