Sweden's Nattsjäl features a current Therion vocalist and a couple of people that used to be in Månegarm and can make the unusual claim to fame that they have released two full albums in under six months, Of Chaos Supreme in February 2023, and the album reviewed here, I marors djup, in July 2023. Metal Archives lists them as black/thrash, but they are more experimental than that would lead you to believe. There are blackened vocals and thrashy riffs but also clean male and female singing, traditional metal riffs and solos, symphonic and folk elements to the songwriting, etc. You get the picture. For example, "I Am the Flame" leans into the speed and raspy singing of black/thrash while "Only Shadows Prevail" has sort of a death and roll vibe. None of the songs turns me off, but neither do they stick around once the album is over. Nattsjäl doesn't sound like other bands very much, but on the other hand, their songs aren't particularly great. Bands like Sigh and Korpikklani briefly come to mind while listening, among others, but only because of the variety, not because Nattsjäl sound like them in anything more than a passing way. The fan with an adventurous streak is likely to get the most mileage from I marors djup; for everyone else it's a mixed bag at best. |
