I haven't reviewed a Mystic Prophecy album since 2016's War Brigade and haven't really liked one since Ravenlord back in 2011. Hellriot is the band's twelfth album, and their sound is intact; bulldozing riffs, pounding drums and gravelly bellowing. This band is too much of a well-oiled machine at this point to release anything that doesn't sound excellent and that is certainly the case with Hellriot. All the pieces of the puzzle are here and if you are into Primal Fear, Judas Priest, Brainstorm (minus the keys), etc., Mystic Prophecy is aiming right at you. What is missing is anything resembling a killer track. Sure, "Hellriot" and "Paranoia" are good songs, throw your fist in the air and sing along to stuff, but there is nothing on this album that made me want to open the windows and annoy the neighbors or check their website for when they might be playing live nearby. This is a really solid band with a really solid formula that is writing songs which don't deviate in any way from what they've done before. That wouldn't be so bad if the songs were amazing, but they aren't, so Hellriot is another good album by Mystic Prophecy, but not any more than that.
