If "Tolkien Metal" was a thing, encompassing bands inspired by the legendary fantasy writer, it would probably be one of the largest, in sheer numbers, subgenres of metal. Germany's Minas Morgul (the stronghold of the Nazgul in The Lord of the Rings) make no secret with their name and because they play an epic style of black metal, let the Summoning comparisons begin. Their eighth album, Nebelung (German for "creature of the mist"), follows the epic black metal blueprint with faster and slower tempos, rasping and clean singing, and a production that creates some space between the instruments for a listener to let their imagination run wild through. It sounds good and the vibe is there, but it isn't quite as immersive as really good examples of this style can be. While my imagination does conjure up images of lands out of time and fantastic events, they weren't as vivid as they might have been. That said, Nebelung is a solid album and falling short of a band like Summoning is certainly not an indicator that your band isn't good, far from it. I can't speak to Minas Morgul's previous works, but it sounds like they've carved out their niche and Nebelung should work just fine for fans of epic black metal. |
