I was supposed to give up on these guys, but seeing as they will be headlining the second night of a metal festival here in town this fall, I figured I'd check out the new stuff that they will play live. Well, not unlike Unconquered in 2020, this is rather underwhelming unless you're a die-hard fan who doesn't care because, well, it's Kataklysm. A thumb up to the title track. It's catchy and is the only one that stuck in my head after the album was over. It's not anything revolutionary, but it's fun. The rest... Well... A few songs have cool passages here and there, but for the most part it's pretty much a flat line. It's not horrible, not even bad, just kind of boring. When a death metal album works best as background music because it won't catch your attention, that's saying something. Some vocals are borderline "core-ish," which just adds insult to injury. Diehards will eat this up. Newcomers, check out their older albums instead. |
