Originally released independently back in 2019, this self-titled album is the lone output from Portland, Oregon's Magnabolt, a band comprised of one current and a couple of former members of Leathürbitch. They play muscular heavy metal that is a strange yet oddly entertaining combination of Thor and Yngwie Malmsteen's early music. The vocals are an imperious shout, clear and ringing, with an authoritative delivery that says, "these vocal lines WILL fit the music" and damn it, the songs bend the knee. There are neoclassical guitar fills strewn all through Magnabolt and it is easy to imagine the guitarists replaying Rising Force and Marching Out to learn all those arpeggios. The songwriting is pure '80s heavy metal and, while none of the songs stands tall, collectively they make for a good listen from start to finish. The band is currently listed at "on hold" on Metal Archives, so this may be the only thing we ever hear from them but if you like '80s metal with a Thor/Manowar vibe and above average guitar work, Stormspell has a CD waiting for you. |
