I've seen Sargon refer to the "Osmose" sound in reviews of bands on that label and, with the EP Abyss Vanguard from Mexico's Demonized, I now get it. This band plays fast and feral black/death metal that puts the pedal to the floor and never lets up, apart from the gothic intro. Rasping shouts and blasting drums combine with machine gun riffs to form a jagged, brutal assault on any eardrums in the blast zone. I like some of the song titles ("Blizzardry of Volcanic Sulphur," "Unleash the Devils Bane") and though one song sounds a lot like the next, this EP hits unrelentingly hard. A few more memorable riffs or perhaps a change of pace here and there would raise this to the next level, but it is still a solid comeback from a band that hasn't released anything in nearly 20 years.
