Review

I discovered this German band's debut album, Power Dive, during a Bandcamp prowl last year and shortly thereafter, it dropped into my review queue. For their next release, they've chosen the EP route, the four-song Shooting Star, again released by Jawbreaker Records. Their hooky, energetic style of traditional, 80s-inspired heavy metal is intact, including the excellent guitars and iffy vocals. "Shooting Star" is the obvious choice to name the EP after, the catchiest tune here, with a great riff and singable chorus. You cannot deny the "Aces High" vibe on "Mercy of the Wind," and "Weeping Willow" is a bit odd in terms of subject matter but still sucks you in. "Rise from the Grave" starts out in the same musical vein as the rest of Shooting Star, but opts for more occult lyrics and gets weird and creepy at the end, a nice way to wrap up the EP. Singer Klay Mensana remains a blessing and a curse for Acid Blade. I love his energy and his high-pitched singing is a good fit for Acid Blade's take on '80s underground heavy metal, but he often struggles to stay in tune and while that isn't a problem once in a while, it is frequent across the four songs. Hopefully, he can tighten things up going forward, something that could take this band to the next level. As it stands, you still should give Shooting Star a listen if you are at all into old school traditional heavy metal and the current resurgence of the style.
