These guys played at the Stormbringer Metal Festival this past July 2022, but I didn't get a chance to see them as I was there at a different time. However, I grabbed a copy of their 2022 demo from Bandcamp. As their name suggests, they are part of the so-called new wave of traditional heavy metal, playing a blend of epic heavy metal with hints of the weird and occult from '70s heavy rock and proto-metal. "The Length of the Chain" has that Manilla Road/Omen DNA with maybe a bit of Uriah Heep while "Blades on the Rampart" is a little more melodic and even a bit folky like Wytch Hazel, but heavier. "To Spires Deep and Caverns High (Riders of the Iron River)" reminds me of newer acts like Smoulder and Gatekeeper. The sound is muted and doesn't let the songs breathe and that's not unexpected for a demo, but it makes me wish I'd caught them live to get a better idea of what they truly sound like. I order stuff from Bandcamp frequently and Chamber Mage put together one of the most impressive packages I've received. Typically, you get the cassette (my format of choice) and maybe a sticker. Singer Avery Berg included a hand-written note thanking me for supporting the band along with a couple of stickers, a download code, and an alternate artwork J-card for the cassette, all in an envelope sealed with a Chamber Mage logo wax seal. Very cool, indeed. It's early, but Chamber Mage is another promising band to watch for fans of traditional heavy metal. |
