This Australian one-man band has been pumping out albums at a furious rate since 2018; two in that year (along with an EP) and one every year since. I've been listening to album number seven, Autumn's Dawn, Winter's Darkness, for a while and it is definitely not the savage, raw black metal you typically encounter from bands down under. It is in the melodic/atmospheric style and with Tolkien references on past releases (album four is called Minas Morgul—The Nazgûl Awaken) it's impossible not to bring up Summoning as a reference. As that would imply, there are some really solid riffs on this album, notably in the title track which opens things up as well as copious acoustic guitars, keyboards, and nature sounds that give it some ebb and flow. The vocals are low in the mix, like really low, little more than a harsh rumble at times, so even if you could understand them, it would be a challenge to make out what is being said. Fathomage's music is similar to Summoning for sure, but it is more atmospheric and less direct, which isn't a bad thing per se, but it is also very long, almost 75 minutes, and it really works better as background music to my ears (think a soundtrack for an epic war gaming session). Autumn's Dawn, Winter's Darkness has some beautiful melodies, evoking far away landscapes, but the parts that are intended to hit hard could do it harder and there aren't enough of them. If you are an atmospheric black metal aficionado, there's probably nothing here you haven't heard, but it is solid and a safe one to pick up. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
