Se, Josta Ei Puhuta (roughly "The One Not Talked About" in English) are a black/thrash fivesome whose last album, Musta, Kylmä, Syvä ja Samea, came out around 11 years ago, so I was surprised that they were still around and even released a new album last year. This is a band that's always been about making harsh, violent black/thrash with a striking melodic sensibility that overall reminds me of Ajattara if they had any thrash in their sound, and Gehenna is just a continuation of that approach, just more refined and professional than before without going overboard and turning into a Dissection wannabe or something. The songwriting is surprisingly catchy and ambitious on this release, always looking to do more than just your average meat-and-potatoes metal, and there isn't a dull track in the bunch. There are standouts, however, such as the simplistic but engaging "Jättiläisten Olkapäillä" (something like "On the Shoulders of Giants") that sports an instantly memorable rhythmic pattern to hold it all together, and the infectious, hymn-like "Aika Saattaa" (I don't get paid enough to keep translating, so that one's homework for you), which is easily the catchiest song on the album. At under 40 minutes, it feels a bit short to my ears, especially with how long it's been in the making, but the fact that it makes me want more is as strong an endorsement as I can give. Here's hoping it's not another 11 years before we hear from these lads again. |
