Damnation Plan have been working their progressive magic for almost 20 years now, with their previous album, Reality Illusion, being released far back in 2017, so they’re definitely the kind of band that will work as long as it takes to get the sound they want. Previously, I would have called them progressive death metal, but outside of some intense spoken word sections in "Under the Veil of Sun", they’ve dropped any death metal leanings entirely and yet have not lost an ounce of aggression, heaviness, or ominous atmosphere. This has made their sound much more unique and engaging than before, in no small part due to the phenomenal vocals of The Circle’s Asim Searah, who may well be one of the most emotionally moving and dramatic singers in metal today, and his approach fits the dark, riff-driven approach of the band perfectly. Musically...well, I’m having a hard time describing it, aren’t I? This is an album of 5 tracks that prove to be some of the best progressive metal I have heard in a long time, and among the few that truly earn the title progressive rather than wallow in the shadow of Dream Theater or Symphony X as they spout arpeggios every two minutes. The atmosphere will consume you, the melodies will enrapture you, the twisting song structures will arrest you, the power and emotion will inspire awe in you, and I feel like I’d be wasting my time trying to break down every emotional twist and musical turn in a way that does it all justice. The album title is not just a fancy turn of phrase, The New Horizon is a singular and affective journey that will lead you to a new horizon in metal if you let it guide you. Phenomenal.
