This one caught me by surprise. Blood Python is a one-man Norwegian act mining down to a very raw and unadulterated ore of classic Heavy Metal. This definitely has some DNA from protean stuff like Mercyful fate or even Venom. This is very bare-bones, with upfront guitars and not much layering to the sound, so it’s just old-fashioned riffing with some keys added in here and there to create a more theatrical vibe, like something from Stormwitch or Cloven Hoof. As a singer, Martin Horn is not tremendous, and he has a kind of rough, strained voice—like if Quorthon was a bit better—but he suits the music here well enough. If you like old-school metal, then this is a band to check out. |
