It’s weird hearing Epoch of Unlight for the first time in nearly 20 years—hell, it’s weird hearing melodic death metal as I pretty much gave up on the genre a long time ago. Simply put, At War with the Universe sounds like Gothenburg-style melodic death metal before the genre started to suck. Decipherable growls, lots of speed, a good dose of heavy/power metal in the music, and Epoch of Unlight don’t water things down, unlike some of their contemporaries, and this stuff is heavy and not exactly accessible for the uninitiated. I can’t say any song stood out as the songs are all very much in the same vein, but in this specific case that’s not really a negative comment as I found everything here quite enjoyable. I still ignore most releases in the genre, but I’m glad I checked this one out as it takes me back to the early 2000s. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
