First album for Hagatiz, and they set the bar high. The band play ‘90s-style black metal, but I also find some resemblance to early 2000s French black metal and at times I was also reminded of Canada’s Megiddo. There’s some of that repetitive chugging throughout, the kind that you "head-bob" to and it has a hypnotic effect; something that wasn’t uncommon in the early ‘90s but that I don’t hear all that much in newer black metal. The atmosphere is cold and creepy as fuck and you can hear that from the first notes and it doesn’t let up until the end, though it varies in style as the album progresses. The raspy vocals sound hellish, just in the right place in the mix; they’re easy to hear but far enough to produce an eerie vibe. Hagatiz aren’t inventing anything here, but this is very, very well executed and this gave me the urge to revisit some old classics and other underground albums from way back when. |
