Iron Spell's Live Magic After Midnight compilation is a release I found while stalking cassette releases on Bandcamp. They are a Chilean traditional metal band with one full-length album, a couple of compilations, and a bunch of singles to their credit over a 10-year career. They play smooth, '80s-style melodic heavy metal with high-pitched vocals, lots of sweet guitar work, and plenty of hooks. Of the six songs on Live Magic after Midnight, Iron Spell give us two original tracks, two covers, and two live versions of songs that originally appeared on their album Electric Conjuring. Of the new songs, "Nightmare" reminds me of something from Wolf's The Black Flame with its combination of melodic accessibility and heaviness, while "Exciter" is like a classic Deep Purple song in terms of vocal lines but with an '80s songwriting style. Both songs are good, nothing you haven't heard before but no less entertaining as a result. The covers are "I've Had Enough (Into the Fire)," originally by KISS, and "Fight for Rock," from Warlock's True as Steel record, so you can perhaps infer a little more clearly where Iron Spell are coming from musically. They do well with each one, perhaps even improving upon the KISS song with their energetic playing. The live songs are OK, the recording treats the guitars well but the vocals not so much and neither song strikes me as anywhere near as good as "Nightmare" or "Exciter." Iron Spell have the right idea, so while Live Magic After Midnight is an overall mediocre entry in the band's catalog, it should be enough to encourage fans of '80s heavy metal to delve deeper as well as be on the lookout for future releases.
